SHA sophomore named Youth Volunteer of the Year
by Ky. Assn. of Homes for the Aged
LOUISVILLE, KY (October 21, 2004) – Robyn
Ballinger, a sophomore at Sacred Heart Academy (SHA), was just
named the Youth
Volunteer of the Year by the Kentucky Association of Homes and
Services for the Aging, Inc. (KAHSA), and was presented with
an award at a special luncheon this afternoon in the South Wing
of Freedom Hall.
Fifteen-year-old Ballinger has volunteered more than 400 hours
of service to the residents of Presbyterian Homes of Louisville
since the summer of 2002, and was nominated for the award by
that organization.
“Robyn’s energy is infectious to both residents
and staff alike. Everyone delights in seeing the love and attention
that she gives to our residents. She personifies what being a
volunteer means … giving of self, by sharing one’s
time and talent with others. Her youthful enthusiasm gives continuing
enjoyment to everyone at Presbyterian Homes of Louisville,” wrote
Naomi Scheirich, Volunteer Coordinator.
In addition to the hundreds of hours Ballinger
has volunteered with Presbyterian Homes, she also volunteers
to teach Sunday
School at her church, raises funds for the Special Olympics,
provides classroom and field trip assistance at the Binet School
(a special needs school), collected books for a physician’s
office in a poverty-stricken area, and more.
Scheirich said, “Presbyterian Homes of Louisville is blessed
to have a youth volunteer as bright and energetic as Robyn Ballinger.”

Ursuline Campus unites for the 10th year to make Christmas better
for nearly 450 poverty-stricken children in Appalachia
LOUISVILLE, KY (November 1, 2004) – After
collecting new toys, gifts and clothing from each of the five
Ursuline Campus
Schools, a large truck will be blessed and leave the Ursuline
Campus in front of Sacred Heart Academy, at 3175 Lexington Road,
around 9:15 a.m. on Monday, November 8 in route to the poverty-stricken
area of Kermit, West Virginia.
The annual trip is the culmination of a
two-week gift drive by each of the Ursuline Campus member schools:
Sacred Heart Academy
(SHA – girls, grades 9-12), Sacred Heart Model School (SHMS
- coed, K-8), Ursuline Montessori School (UMS - coed, ages 2-12),
Ursuline Child Development Center (UCDC - coed ages 1-5), and
the Ursuline School for the Performing Arts (USPA - coed, all
ages).
SHA’s Community Awareness Club (C.A.C.)
organizes the annual event, now in its 10th year, and several
SHA and SHMS
students, accompanied by faculty and parents, will deliver the
clothing and toys to the Christian Help Organization, founded
by an Ursuline Sister in 1975. Former SHA English teacher Sister
Brendan Conlon now runs the organization, whose mission is to
serve the rural mountain poor in Mingo County, West Virginia.
“All five schools on campus give to the Appalachian community through this
gift and toy drive. I think that this is a wonderful way for the entire UCS community
to demonstrate the Ursuline core values of service and community,” said
Marie Griffin, SHA teacher and C.A.C. moderator. “The students do not know
who will be receiving their gifts on Christmas morning, but they can imagine!
It gives them a chance to be Secret Santas.”
Due to the efforts of Ursuline Campus Schools, Conlon said
the Christian Help Organization was able to provide gifts for
Christmas to 230 families and almost 450 children last year.
“The UCS gift drive is a great and simple way for the
students to make a difference. By giving to children who would
not normally receive much for Christmas, we are helping out the
less fortunate and spreading the sense of cheer and joy that
accompanies the holiday season. Also, the gift drive has grown
into a tradition that many [UCS] students look forward to each
year,” said Kali Chatham, C.A.C. president and SHA senior.
