School Uniform

Dress and Uniform Policy

The school uniform is to be worn correctly each school day unless a special exception has been announced. The uniform should be neat, clean, pressed, in good condition, and worn to standard while on the Ursuline Campus. Hairstyles, hair color and makeup should be compatible with the traditional spirit of the regulation uniform. With the exception of ear lobes, no body piercing is permitted. Tattoos are also prohibited.

The daily SHA school uniform consists of the following:

  • Approved navy skirt. Length is to be no shorter than three inches above the top of the knee.
  • Short-sleeved or long-sleeved white button-down collared oxford cloth shirt, short-sleeved or long-sleeved white polo shirt, or a white long-sleeved turtleneck shirt. Mock turtlenecks are not allowed. No logos, except those approved by the school are allowed on shirts, which should be tucked in at all times. When tucked, shirts cannot overhang the waistline by more than three inches.
  • Approved navy school sweater with Sacred Heart Academy monogram or the school-approved senior (only) sweatshirt. A uniform shirt must be worn under the sweater or sweatshirt with the collar showing at all times.
  • Solid navy or white crew style socks that must cover the entire anklebone or navy or white tights. When both tights and socks are worn, the color must be the same. No logos, stripes, or heather tones are allowed.
  • Shoes must be a loafer, flat or tie-up oxford or athletic shoe, which is neat, clean and below the ankle. For safety reasons, shoes without backs (sandals, slip-ons, or clogs) may not be worn.
  • Solid white T-shirts may be worn under the uniform shirt.
  • Only the official SHA sweat pants, sold in the campus store, may be worn before and after school hours on cold days or during the school day as determined by the administration.

Dress Uniform: On special occasions where more formal attire is required (such as on liturgy days or open house), a dress uniform consisting of the uniform skirt and sweater, white collared oxford cloth or turtleneck shirt, navy tights or knee socks, and dress shoe is worn.

Jeans/Casual/Spirit Days: On days approved by the administration, more casual attire consisting of blue jeans or sweat/dance pants, shirts or sweatshirts with SHA logo, and school- approved footwear is allowed. Modest shorts may only be worn during warmer months when announced by the administration. On these designated days, collars do not have to be showing and shirttails do not have to be tucked in. Halter or tank tops, shirts that reveal the midriff, scrubs, pajama bottoms, footies, boots, clogs, sandals or hiking shoes are not permitted. Clothing that refers to drugs, alcohol, sex, or profanity (written or in picture) or any clothing that is not in keeping with Christian modesty and values is not acceptable at school or at school functions.

Other clothing regulations: Coats, jackets, non-uniform sweatshirts, hats, and scarves may not be worn in the school building during school hours.

A student temporarily out of uniform for any reason must obtain a written note of explanation from her parent/guardian prior to the day. On these occasions, the student must be dressed in clothing comparable to the uniform.

While an attempt has been made to present the dress regulations as completely as possible, there may be special cases where an accessory or article of dress is in question. The general rule to follow: If the article of dress or accessory is not listed above as part of the regulation uniform, assume it is inappropriate. The decision of the dean of students regarding the appropriateness of any item is final.

Those failing to comply with the uniform regulations and/or casual day regulations or who are in any way dressed inappropriately will be given a detention and/or will be sent home or must call home to have the appropriate uniform brought to her. The dean of students makes final determination as to appropriateness of student dress.
