SHA King Scholars
Nick King and his late wife, Carol Zurkuhlen King, a graduate of
the SHA Class of 1962, established the King Scholar Program in 1999. The King Scholar
Program is administered by the King Foundation for Social Justice, Inc and creates
opportunities for students who have financial need, academic potential and strong
motivation to excel in life. In addition to maintaining high scholastic and behavioral
standards, King Scholars must participate in academic, cultural and leadership enrichment
activities. The amount of financial assistance provided to the King Scholar is dependent
upon financial need. In appropriate situations it may consist of full tuition and books
for the recipient’s four years at SHA. The program is open to all incoming ninth grade
applicants who meet the program’s financial need and academic requirements.
The original goal of the King Scholar Program was to offer an SHA education to fifteen
girls who lacked the financial resources to attend the academy. Because of the
unparalleled success of the program, in 2001 the King foundation agreed to provide
an additional $500,000 to sponsor more King Scholars if SHA raised $250,000 for the
same purpose. SHA surpassed this goal and contributed $359,000 to the King Scholar
Program. These collective sums allow both the King Foundation for Social Justice,
Inc and Sacred Heart Academy to allow more women to attend SHA and create a more
racially and socio-economically diverse student body.
Since its inception, the King Scholar Program has offered a SHA education to 51
young women who otherwise would have been financially unable to attend the academy.
Thirty-six King Scholars have graduated from SHA and nine
are presently attending the academy.
